I.A.S Diploma
It has been recognised for many years that technical staff in anatomy departments have not been able to study for a qualification that was relevant to the job, consequently the “Diploma” has been designed to appeal to established staff as well as new recruits to the profession.
At present we have members from Bristol, Brighton, London, Liverpool, Birmingham, Newcastle, Nottingham, Cambridge, Cork, Dublin, Cardiff , Southampton and Teneriffe working towards the “Diploma” with many others expressing interest in the programme.
The Diploma was initially adapted in 1996 from an in-house scheme introduced in the Department of Anatomy at Bristol University for training new technical staff. It has now evolved so that the scope of the Diploma covers the duties of most Anatomy / Pathology staff or anyone involved in a similar line of work.
The Diploma Syllabus has been constructed so that all elements of theory must be studied. From a practical outlook, each candidate also has the option to develop practical skills to a standard that reflect their job role/facilities within their place of employment. It would be expected that areas of high job involvement would be completed to a higher standard of practical skill (Full Unit), whereas areas where either work duties or facilities are restricted would be studied in less depth (Half Unit). Candidates may feel that some areas are not relevant to them personally, but should remember that if they were to move to another place of employment, it might be part of their daily workload.
The Diploma comprises three Levels so as to appeal to as wide a candidate base as possible. The Levels have been designed to reflect differing standards of practical and academic ability, and to lead the candidate progressively towards attaining the Diploma or a Level award. This staged structure also allows candidates to find and reach their own level of achievement and to attain Accreditation Points towards their membership status within the Institute of Anatomical Sciences.
The training programme, at all Levels, consists of Theory Units, Practical Units and a Viva Voce Examination held in the candidate’s place of employment. For completion of the Diploma, the candidate must have successfully completed all elements of the three Levels. The majority of training will be completed in the candidate’s own work environment, however, where facilities are restricted, IAS approved workshops can be attended to develop the required skills.

The Levels are designed to be completed in the candidate’s own work environment at their own pace. There is no time limit! Each component submitted will be assessed according to the criteria outlined for each specific Level.

The establishment of the Diploma aims to provide a national technical standard, which will be recognised by employers in the field both nationally and internationally. Registration carries a fee of £50.00 and is open to any fully paid up member of the institute (subject to approval).
