About the I.A.S web site V1.4.5

Concepts

Defining the purpose of a web site is essential to making it popular. Is it supposed to deliver information quickly and simply? Is it supposed to be a showcase for the company or organisation in question? Being the organisation that it is, the I.A.S is more about communication and so the site that represents it should answer the former question rather than the latter. By it's nature it is more likely that the I.A.S will be providing services for it's existing members than attempting to attract large amounts of new members at any one time so the site was primarily developed to do that. Of course, it is also essential that new members are catered for.

Implementation & changes

The style is intended to be simple, easily understood and easy to use. For instance, the menu structure is designed to show you only the options for the section you are currently concerned with. This means that you are not bombarded with options for other pages.
The colour scheme is made up of pastel versions of the I.A.S insignia colours as the defined colours for the logo are too bright for laying out a web site. The primary font is Arial which is widely accepted as a font for public documents as the characters are quickly legible.
It is a 'sandwich' type site - the upper and lower parts remain the same while the content between changes. This allows a constant banner at the top and maximum exposure for sponsors at the bottom without interfering with content.
The structure involves fewer pages than a page-by-page site and therefore less work when changes are made.
The version number listed above is only altered when a change to the layout is made. Change control of the content of a web site is not necessary as it is the function of the site to be changed. Version 1.4.5 is so called because it uses the 1st version of the fundamental layout, the 4th main menu structure and the 5th sub-menu structure. Major revisions to the facilities of the site will cause changes to all the categories of the version number.

Technicals

The layout is achieved by employing a table with the various cells within making up the constituent parts of the site. This gives a frames type appearance while avoiding the rendering problems associated with true frames and also allows the site to remain the same size no matter what the screen resolution of the computer viewing it is set to, although PDA browsers may produce odd layouts due to the usual screen size limitations.
The site was constructed with hand coded HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language - the basic language of a web page) using AppleWorks 6.2.9, Apple Texedit, Kate and Microsoft Notepad with testing done by Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 5, 5.5, 6 and 7, Microsoft Pocket Internet Explorer versions 2002 & 2003, Mozilla Firefox 1.0 - 2.0, Konqeuror 3.1, 3.4 & 3.5 and also Apple Safari versions 1.0 and 1.2, 2.0.3 & 2.0.4.

The site is hosted by GoHOT on Web Server 6 which runs FreeBSD Unix and serves pages through Apache 1.3.33.
